I'm going to take a complicated subject and quickly make it simple; here are the rules:
1)
carbs + protein = gain mass fat + protein = muscle retention simple carbs + protein = mass loss
2)
calories in > calories out = gain mass calories in = calories out = mass retention calories in < calories out = mass loss
3)
carbs = 4 calories/gram fat = 9 calories/gram protein = 4 calories/gram alcohol = 7 calories/gram
